Install from Chrome Web Store Get Freenet

The Chrome Web Store build updates itself. Zips on this page are often newer: we can publish them as soon as they are built, without waiting for Chrome’s review.

What it is

A browser side panel for public comments on the current web page. Each page has its own thread on Freenet — software you run on this computer. There is no FreePinion company server. We do not receive your comments.

You need Freenet

Install Freenet and wait until http://127.0.0.1:7509/ shows the dashboard. Without it you can open the panel, but you cannot publish.

How to use

• Pin FreePinion and click the toolbar icon. A number on the icon is how many messages this page already has.
• Chat — public comments for this URL. The first post asks for a name in Chat; change it later in Account.
• Inbox — private messages with the same identity.
• Account — that name and your key. Export a recovery code if you use more than one computer.
• Mute — private, this browser only.
• Ban / Trust — Ban is public on this page. Trust (follow their bans) stays in this browser.
• Global Board — optional lists of pages people chose to share. Metadata only, not the message.

Reading does not need an identity. Posting does. Every new post spends about one second of proof-of-work on this computer so spam is expensive, or you can stamp it with a Ghost Key instead. That is not mining: it does not run while you only read. Edits, deletes, and Ban skip that work; if you have a Ghost Key they use it. Private chats can use the same choice. FreePinion is not affiliated with Freenet. The extension is free. A Ghost Key donation goes to Freenet, not to FreePinion.

chrome://, router/LAN pages, and the Freenet dashboard have no thread. Freenet web apps (/v1/contract/web/…) do.

Install without the store (Chrome and Brave)

1. Start Freenet.
2. Download a Chrome / Brave zip below (folder with manifest.json at the top).
3. Open chrome://extensions or brave://extensions.
4. Turn on Developer mode → Load unpacked → that folder.

Older Chrome and Brave versions

Keep the same folder you loaded the first time. Unzip the new files into it, replace when asked, then click Reload on the FreePinion card. Do not Load unpacked a second folder, or Mute and alias reset.

Firefox

A separate build, not signed by Mozilla. Firefox installs it permanently only if this browser allows unsigned add-ons.

1. Download the Firefox zip below.
2. Open about:config, accept the warning, search xpinstall.signatures.required, and set it to false.
3. Rename the file so it ends in .xpi.
4. Open that file with Firefox, or use Add-ons → the gear menu → Install Add-on From File. Confirm the warning that it is not verified.

Leave the preference false only on a browser you use for this. Setting it back to true later does not remove an add-on already installed; it blocks the next unsigned update. You can instead load the unzipped folder from about:debugging without changing the preference. That copy is removed when you quit Firefox. On Firefox the panel is a sidebar, not Chrome’s side panel. The sidebar offers a newer Firefox zip only. A Chrome-only update does not appear there, and a Firefox-only update does not appear in Chrome or Brave.

Privacy

Comments, alias, fingerprint, and Ban are public on Freenet for that page. Mute, Trust, and a short cache stay in this browser. The identity seed stays in the Freenet vault on this machine. Full policy: privacy.html.
